Aspiring farmer shares her learning journey under the APTC-NATI partnership

Aspiring farmers like Baciseva Tinai are challenging perceptions that commercial farming is only for men. She is studying at the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute (NATI) to become a qualified farmer.

The Australian Government, through the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC), supports NATI to strengthen agriculture training for Fijians, including opportunities for more women to become qualified farmers and develop new businesses.

Thirteen women are supported through the NATI-APTC initiative.

Providing skills for improved livelihoods for sugarcane industry workers

Rakiraki district suffered widespread damages as a result of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in February 2016. As a result, Fiji Sugar Corporation’s Penang Mill sustained severe damages leaving many mill workers without employment and a source of income.

The European Union and the Australian Government responded quickly to build the capacities of the displaced workers to help them gain alternative livelihoods to sustain their livelihoods through the European Union-funded Training Support to the Fijian Sugarcane Industry Project, that provided training delivered by the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC).

We followed the journey of three displaced mill workers – Joji Miller, Petero Tuilewa and Leone Vosailagi – and how their lives were transformed through the APTC training.

Today, Joji, Petero and Leone are three of over 1,600 sugarcane industry workers who have attained Australian qualifications from APTC as part of the Training Support to the Fijian Sugarcane Industry project.

One Story - Many Lives

Anna Matane is passionate about creating a safe community for all to live in. She is a decorated officer of the Papua New Guinea Royal Constabulary, who recently completed a stint with the RAMSI Mission as Advisor to the Solomon Islands Police. She is one of the many outstanding graduates trained by the Australia-Pacific Technical College, an Australian Government initiative delivering Technical Vocational Education and Training to Pacific people. In 2011, Anna graduated with a Diploma of Community Services and is part of the growing APTC alumni of over 12,000 graduates.

One Story - Many Lives

Avikash Singh is an emerging talent in the culinary industry in the Pacific. He is one of the many outstanding graduates trained by the Australia-Pacific Technical College, an Australian Government initiative delivering Technical Vocational Education and Training to Pacific people. Avikash graduated in 2011 with a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery qualification, and is part of the growing APTC alumni of over 10,600 graduates. He believes that his APTC training has had a major impact on his career.

APTC Building Hope

The Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) is the proud recipient of the 2013 Pacific Human Rights Award, one of only four organisations and two individuals selected from across the region to be recognised for their outstanding work and contribution towards advancing the human rights of Pacific Islanders and their communities. The biennial award is presented by the Regional Rights and Resource Team under SPC.

This short video submission by APTC titled "Building Hope" highlights the dynamic partnership between APTC, the Samoa Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA) and the local community. Together they built shelter for 200 of the 'most severely disadvantaged' families in Samoan villages in the South West of Upolu Island, following the devastation caused by Cyclone Evan in December 2012.

APTC Carpentry students assist in TC Winston recovery efforts

Efforts by APTC carpentry students to help Fijians rebuild their homes was featured in Fiji TV's Close Up program on Sunday 20 March 2016. Fiji TV travelled to Rakiraki to film and interview students and their trainers as they undertook repair work to houses damaged by Cyclone Winston.

APTC students will continue contributing towards relief efforts to help families and communities who have been affected by TC Winston.

The European Union's AMPSP Programme

This brief documentary provides information about the European Union's Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol (AMSP) Programme. It also features training provided by the EU-funded Training Support for Sugar Industry Project (2014-2017), which resulted from an agreement of delegated co-operation between the EU and the Australian Government in 2014. Under this agreement, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade engaged the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) to deliver training to those in the Fiji sugar industry.
